Shaving bumps and acne breakouts may look similar, but they aren’t quite the same thing. This is made even worse by the fact that razors can actually irritate the skin and cause acne, but it doesn’t have to be confusing, and this article will help you understand and improve your skin problems.

The proper name for the bumps caused by shaving is pseudofolliculitis barbae, which is quite a long term, so we’re going to stick with bumps for the purpose of this article. This is a little different than acne vulgaris, or common acne, although the two conditions are similar.

Acne is caused when the pore that a hair follicle resides in becomes clogged with dead skin cells and oil from your skin. If this is a just a clog, you get whiteheads and blackheads. If the glob becomes infected, you develop a pimple.

Shaving bumps, on the other hand, are the result of hair follicles becoming inflamed and irritated by the act of shaving. Basically, what happens is that as hair grows back after shaving, they can become trapped inside the follicle. This creates irritation, and if it goes on, can lead to infection.

Acne results from in body factors that are hard to treat, but shaving bumps can largely be eliminated by using proper shaving technique. One of the easiest ways to do it is to simply use an electric razor. This gives you a shave that isn’t as close, but it also tends to avoid the trauma that causes the shaving bumps.

That said, not everyone who shaves will want to use an electric shaver, so we’re going to discuss proper razor technique as well. The first thing you need to do is wash the area thoroughly with warm water. If you can, steam will go a long way. This will open up the follicles, preventing the hairs from getting trapped, and it also helps you improve your blood flow to the area.

Once you’ve done that, you need to lather properly and use a fairly light lather. This will help the razor move smoothly over the area and provide less irritation. The other thing you need to keep in mind is that those multiblade razors do their work by pulling hairs up out of the skin and cutting the hair, which virtually guarantees shaving bumps for those that are prone to it.

These same techniques will also help you relieve acne that can be caused by shaving. Acne can be irritated by shaving; what happens is that improper shaving causes the skin to swell and get irritated, this leads to the pores becoming g clogged which leads to additional acne.

If this happens to you, you need to make absolutely sure that you treat your skin gently. In addition to the above, you need to start shaving with the grain instead of against it. This is not how we usually shave, and will feel weird the first few times you do it, but it will substantially reduce your acne problems.

Shaving bumps and acne breakouts aren’t the same thing, but if you follow the advice in this article, you can kill two birds with one stone. Clear skin is right around the corner with just a few changes.
